S Group’s Research Institute aimed to develop accurate multilingual AI translation app specialized for construction and shipbuilding sites.

A strategic Research Institute under a leading Korean conglomerate focuses on global environmental issues and safety accident prevention. It provides guidance on environmental, health, and safety matters, along with on-site consulting and specialized training to prepare for the future and help solve current issues.

Starting the project…

As of 2022, the number of international workers in the construction and shipbuilding sites in Korea is estimated to exceed 100,000 and steadily rising. According to data, safety incidents at construction sites are increasing, with language barriers* identified as a major factor in accidents among foreign workers. 

At construction sites managed by the Client S, safety concerns were addressed through initiatives such as safety signs, translated manuals, and interpreter services. Despite these efforts, communication challenges persisted, particularly due to minstranslations of construction jargon, leading to communication breakdowns and safety risks. Thus, Client S aimed to develop an AI translation app specialized in construction jargon.

The role of Crowdworks AI is…

• Provide essential consulting for enterprise, including defining requirements
• Build data required for prompt engineering of models, including specialized datasets for construction and shipbuilding jargon by using terminology dictionaries from  MOLIT(Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport), OSHA(Occupational Safety & Health Agency), and S Group affiliates

Results of development:

Over 90% accuracy and satisfaction rate from field worker tests

Following the build of translated dataset in 15 languages, Crowdworks AI conducted over 1.05 million evaluations. The developed app flawlessly translates field-specific terms and offers convenient usability with STT and TTS functions, and the ability to save frequently used sentences. On-site worker testing yielded over 90% accuracy and satisfaction ratings.

Finishing the project…

The app will be used at S Group’s construction sites for real-time translation of work instructions and tailored TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) and safety training. It’s expected to facilitate seamless communication among multinational workers, foster cultural respect, and build camaraderie among colleagues. Client S plans to validate its usability further for wider adoption by small and medium-sized construction companies.
